Open letter to the Honourable Chrystia Freeland

February 25th, 2018

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland
Minister of Foreign Affairs,
House of Commons,
Ottawa K1A 0A6

Dear Minister Freeland:

“The Committee in Support of the Uprising to Topple Islamic Republic of Iran” condemns the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva for allowing Alireza Avaei to speak at the opening of the UNHRC’s upcoming main annual session.

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland
Alireza Avaei was the Prosecutor general in Dezful and Ahwas, the two major cities in south of Iran, for nine (9) years, and became the most senior Judicial Official in the provinces of Lorestan and Isfahan for eight (8) years. From 2014 to 2015 he served as the Tehran Prosecutor and in August of 2017 he became Iran’s Justice Minister. Tens of thousands of activists were executed by his direct order; some were children under the age of 18, many more were arrested and tortured.” It is estimated that Alireza Avaei is responsible for the execution order of over 30,000 political prisoners and imprisonment of over 8,000 activists.
He is directly responsible for terrorizing the people of Iran by his brutal orders. Because of his direct orders many activists ruthlessly were arrested, tortured and executed, among them women, students, gays and lesbians, ethnic and religious minorities, and even youth and children under age”. As mentioned in the 2011 European Union sanctions, Alireza Avaei was condemned for his actions as President of Tehran Judiciary, noting, “He has been responsible for human rights violations, arbitrary arrests, denials of prisoners’ rights and increase of executions.”

The Iranian Justice Minister, Alireza Avaei, must be expelled, not only from The United Nations but from all International Agencies for his crimes against the people of Iran. The UNHRC should refuse to accept the presence of the Islamic Regime’s Justice Minister Alireza Avaei who is responsible for the arrest, torture and execution of tens of thousands of political prisoners.

It is shameful that, while the people of Iran are standing firm against the entire Islamic Republic of Iran, the UNHRC in Geneva, instead of expelling Alireza Avaei, invites him to speak at its main annual session. The Committee in Support of the Uprising to Topple Islamic Republic of Iran urges the United Nations to respect Universal Jurisdiction and consider the crimes committed by Alireza Avaei to be considered crimes against all; therefore, no place should be a safe haven for him or any other Islamic Republic officials who have committed countless crimes against humanity.
